The Silver Dollar Fish

The school of fish refined from your original photo (image 3730.jpg) are Silver Dollar Fish, most commonly belonging to the Metynnis species (such as Metynnis argenteus or Metynnis hypsauchen). These iconic, glittering fish are native to the densely vegetated, slow-moving river basins of the Amazon and Paraguay rivers in South America. They are close relatives of both the Pacu and the notorious Piranha, though they possess a vastly different, peaceful nature.

Appearance and Physical Features

Coin-Like Brilliance: True to their name, their bodies are heavily compressed laterally and almost perfectly round, strongly resembling a large, shiny silver coin. Their scales feature a brilliant, metallic silver iridescence that reflects light beautifully as they move in unison.

Subtle Red Tinting: Depending on their exact mood, water quality, and maturity, many Silver Dollars will display a beautiful, translucent red or orange tint along the front edge of their anal fin (the lower rear fin).

Camouflaged Fry: While the adults are solid metallic silver, juvenile Silver Dollars in the wild often display very faint black spots or vertical bars along their sides to help them blend into river weeds. These markings fade into pure silver as they mature.

Temperament and Schooling Behavior

Strict Schooling Instinct: Silver Dollars are highly social "shoaling" fish. In the wild and in captivity, they rely heavily on strength in numbers to feel safe. They should always be kept in groups of at least 5 or more individuals. Watching a tight school of them effortlessly glide, turn, and flash across an aquarium is one of their most appealing traits.

Skittish and Gentle: Despite their intimidating piranha-like shape, Silver Dollars are incredibly peaceful and somewhat timid. They are easily startled by sudden movements outside the glass or sudden lighting changes, which can cause them to dart frantically. Providing hiding spaces like large driftwood structures helps them feel secure.

Care and Habitat Requirements

Tank Size: Because they grow to a substantial size—reaching an adult diameter of 6 inches (15 cm)—and must be kept in a group, they require significant swimming room. A long 75-gallon tank is considered the bare minimum for a proper school, with 100+ gallons being ideal.

The Ultimate Plant Mowers: Silver Dollars are primarily herbivores. They have a notorious reputation in the aquarium hobby for treating live plants like an all-you-can-eat buffet. They will easily shred and devour almost any soft live greenery (like Amazon Swords or hygrophila) in a matter of days. If you want live plants with them, you must stick to incredibly tough, fibrous species like Java Fern or Anubias.

Diet & Water Parameters: They thrive in warm tropical water temperatures between 24°C and 28°C (75°F to 82°F) with a soft, slightly acidic to neutral pH of 6.0 to 7.0. Their diet should be heavily plant-based, utilizing high-quality spirulina flakes, veggie pellets, and regular treats of fresh blanched zucchini, shelled peas, or romaine lettuce, alongside occasional flake proteins.
